One Room Losing Power

Why One Room Has Lost Power

If only one room in your home loses power, the issue is usually isolated to a single circuit. This often points to a tripped breaker, loose wiring, or a failed outlet acting as a weak link in the circuit.

1. Tripped Breaker

The most common cause is a breaker that has tripped due to overload or a momentary fault. Reset the breaker and see if power returns.

2. Loose Wiring on the Circuit

A loose wire in any outlet, switch, or junction box on the circuit can cause the entire room to lose power.

See loose wiring symptoms.

3. Failed Outlet on the Circuit

Many rooms are wired in a daisy-chain. If one outlet fails, everything downstream may lose power.

4. GFCI Tripped Upstream

Some rooms (especially bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas) are protected by a GFCI located elsewhere. If that GFCI trips, the entire room may lose power.

See GFCI won’t reset.

5. Overloaded Circuit

Too many devices on one circuit can cause intermittent or complete power loss.

See overloaded circuit symptoms.

6. Damaged Wiring

Rodents, moisture, or aging insulation can damage wiring and cause a room to lose power.

When One Room Losing Power Becomes Dangerous

Call an electrician immediately if you notice:

  • Burning smell
  • Warm outlets
  • Sparks or popping sounds
  • Lights dimming before power loss

When to Call an Electrician

If resetting the breaker doesn’t restore power, a licensed electrician can test the circuit, inspect connections, and identify the source of the outage.
