Half the House Without Power

Why Half Your House Has No Power

When half the home loses power, the issue is usually related to the main service, a loose neutral, or a failing breaker. Homes receive two “legs” of power from the utility company — if one leg fails, half the house goes dark.

1. Loose Neutral Connection

A loose neutral can cause uneven voltage, flickering lights, or half the home losing power. This is one of the most common causes.

2. Utility Company Issue

A failing transformer or loose service line can cause one leg of power to drop. This often results in half the home losing power.

3. Failing Main Breaker

If the main breaker is weak or damaged, it may fail to deliver power to one side of the panel.

4. Damaged Service Entrance Cable

Weather, age, or pests can damage the service cable, causing partial outages.

5. Overloaded Circuits

Heavy electrical loads can cause one leg to drop temporarily, especially in older homes.

6. Loose Wiring in the Panel

Loose lugs or connections inside the panel can cause intermittent or partial outages.

When Half the House Losing Power Becomes Dangerous

Call an electrician immediately if you notice:

  • Burning smell
  • Warm breakers
  • Lights dimming or surging
  • Sparks or popping sounds

When to Call an Electrician

If half the home loses power, a licensed electrician can test the service, inspect the panel, and determine whether the issue is inside the home or with the utility company.
