Why Your Outlet or Switch Is Buzzing
A buzzing outlet or switch is a warning sign that something is wrong. While some faint electrical hums can be normal in certain devices, outlets and switches should never make noise. Buzzing often indicates loose wiring, arcing, or overloaded circuits — all of which can become dangerous if ignored.
1. Loose Wiring Connections
Loose wiring is the most common cause of buzzing. When wires aren’t tightly secured, electricity can arc or vibrate, creating a buzzing or humming sound. This is especially common in older homes or heavily used circuits.

2. Overloaded Circuit
If the outlet or switch is on an overloaded circuit, the increased electrical demand can cause components to vibrate or overheat. This often happens when high‑wattage appliances run on the same circuit.
For more overload indicators, see overloaded circuit symptoms.
3. Failing Outlet or Switch
Outlets and switches wear out over time. When internal components loosen or degrade, they may buzz under load. A switch that feels warm, loose, or crackles when used should be replaced immediately.

4. Arcing Inside the Device
Arcing occurs when electricity jumps between loose or damaged connections. This produces a sharp, irregular buzzing or crackling sound and is extremely dangerous. Arcing can lead to melting, burning smells, or fire.
If you notice odors, review burning or melting smell.
5. Dimmer Switch Issues
Dimmers often buzz when paired with incompatible bulbs, especially older dimmers with LED lights. While some low-level hum is normal, loud buzzing indicates a mismatch or failing dimmer.
6. Faulty Appliance or Plug
Sometimes the buzzing comes from the device plugged into the outlet rather than the outlet itself. A failing charger, motor, or transformer can vibrate loudly and transfer noise to the outlet.
When Buzzing Becomes Dangerous
Stop troubleshooting and call an electrician if you notice:
- Loud or irregular buzzing
- Burning smell or heat from the outlet or switch
- Sparks or visible arcing
- Buzzing that gets worse under load
When to Call an Electrician
A buzzing outlet or switch is rarely a minor issue. If tightening bulbs or reducing load doesn’t stop the noise, the problem is likely wiring-related or internal to the device. A licensed electrician can diagnose the source and ensure the circuit is safe.
