Buzzing or Humming Panel

Why Your Electrical Panel Is Buzzing or Humming

A buzzing or humming sound coming from your electrical panel is a warning sign. While some low-level humming can be normal, loud or persistent noise often indicates a loose connection, overloaded circuit, or failing breaker. These issues can lead to overheating and fire risk if ignored.

1. Normal Low-Level Transformer Hum

Some panels produce a faint hum due to the electrical load on the system. This is typically soft, consistent, and not accompanied by heat or flickering lights. If the sound is loud, irregular, or new, it’s not normal.

2. Loose Breaker or Poor Connection

A loose breaker can vibrate under load, creating a buzzing sound. Loose wiring on the breaker or bus bar can also cause arcing, which produces a sharper, more dangerous buzz.

3. Overloaded Circuit

When a circuit is overloaded, the breaker may hum as it struggles to handle the electrical demand. This often happens with space heaters, microwaves, hair dryers, or multiple high-wattage devices on one circuit.

For more overload indicators, see overloaded circuit symptoms.

4. Failing Breaker

A breaker that is worn out or internally damaged can buzz or hum before it fails completely. If the breaker feels warm, trips frequently, or won’t reset, replacement may be necessary.

See breaker won’t reset for more details.

5. Arcing Inside the Panel

Arcing produces a sharp, crackling buzz and is extremely dangerous. It occurs when electricity jumps between loose or damaged connections. Arcing can lead to melting, burning smells, and fire risk.

If you notice odors, review burning or melting smell.

6. AFCI or GFCI Breaker Noise

AFCI and GFCI breakers may hum when they detect faults. If the noise is accompanied by frequent tripping, the breaker is likely responding to a wiring or appliance issue.

See AFCI keeps tripping for more help.

When the Noise Becomes Dangerous

Stop troubleshooting and call an electrician immediately if you notice:

  • Loud buzzing or crackling
  • Burning smell or heat from the panel
  • Lights flickering when the noise occurs
  • Repeated breaker tripping

When to Call an Electrician

A buzzing or humming panel is often a sign of a serious electrical issue. A licensed electrician can inspect the breakers, wiring, and bus bar to ensure the system is safe and functioning properly.
