Why Your Outlet or Switch Isn’t Sitting Flush Against the Wall
An outlet or switch that sticks out, tilts, or won’t sit flush against the wall is more than a cosmetic issue. It can indicate loose mounting hardware, a damaged electrical box, or wiring tension that prevents the device from seating properly. These issues can lead to loose connections, arcing, or overheating.
1. Loose Mounting Screws
The most common cause is loose screws that secure the outlet or switch to the electrical box. Over time, vibration or repeated use can cause these screws to loosen, making the device sit unevenly.
2. Electrical Box Set Too Far Back
If the electrical box is recessed too deeply into the wall, the outlet or switch may not reach the wall surface. This is common in older homes or after drywall repairs.
Box extenders are often required to bring the device to a safe, flush position.
3. Warped or Damaged Electrical Box
A cracked or bent electrical box can prevent the outlet or switch from mounting securely. This can cause the device to tilt, wobble, or sit unevenly.
4. Wiring Tension Behind the Device

7. Drywall Damage Around the Box
If the drywall around the electrical box is damaged or crumbling, the outlet or switch may not have a stable surface to sit against.
